Seasonal Mower Maintenance Checklist: What Parts to Replace (and When)
Share
A well-maintained mower lasts decades. A neglected one? It'll let you down on the hottest Saturday of summer. Here's the seasonal checklist our team swears by — built around the Australian mowing calendar.
Start of Season (August–September)
- ✅ Blade: Sharpen or replace if nicked or bent
- ✅ Air filter: Replace paper filters; clean foam filters with soapy water
- ✅ Spark plug: Replace annually — they're cheap and make a huge difference to starting
- ✅ Oil & oil filter: Full oil change before the season begins
- ✅ Drive belt: Inspect for cracking, fraying, or glazing — replace if in doubt
- ✅ Battery (ride-ons): Charge and load-test; replace if it won't hold charge
Mid-Season (November–January)
- ✅ Blade: Re-sharpen or swap if cutting quality drops
- ✅ Air filter: Check and clean — dust and grass clippings clog filters fast in dry conditions
- ✅ Fuel filter: Replace if the engine is hesitating or hard to start
- ✅ Tyres (ride-ons): Check pressure and inspect for wear
End of Season (April–May)
- ✅ Full oil change: Don't store with old oil — acids in used oil corrode engine internals
- ✅ Fuel: Either run the tank dry or add a fuel stabiliser
- ✅ Blade: Remove, clean, and store or replace ready for next season
- ✅ Deck: Scrape off caked grass, check for rust, and touch up with paint if needed
- ✅ Battery: Remove and store on a trickle charger over winter
Our rule of thumb: if a part costs less than $20 and you're not sure, just replace it. The cost of a breakdown mid-mow is always higher.
